A loft conversion is one of the best ways to extend your living space, being both cost-effective and relatively simple. However, there are different types of loft conversions and it is important to choose the right style for your needs. On this page, we look at dormer, mansard and hip-to-gable attic conversions.
If you live in Fleet, Basingstoke or the surrounding areas, MY Carpenter Ltd can help find the perfect option for your home. We offer advice, planning and building services, including bespoke carpentry to make the most of loft space.
Dormer conversions are one of the most popular styles. A dormer window extends out of the roof and has three walls which are at a 90° angle to the existing roof. This new structure can either have a flat or pitched roof.
Dormers can vary in size and it is even possible to combine two dormers to create an L-shaped addition. The latter requires your house to have a suitably-shaped roof.
The main benefit of dormer attic conversions is that they increase headroom and floor space inside the loft. They also allow you to fit standard windows.
A mansard loft conversion involves altering the roof to create an outer wall which slopes inwards at about 72°, with a flat roof. Mansard conversions are typically built to the rear of properties in Basingstoke and Fleet, but they can also be built to the front. As with dormer conversions, it is possible to create an L-shaped conversion, depending on the existing roof shape.
Standard windows are typically fitted within small dormers.
Mansard conversions greatly increase interior space but do often require planning permission. Please talk to us at MY Carpenter if you have any questions.
Hip-to-gable loft conversions are suitable for houses with a sloped, or hipped, end roof. This type of conversion involves straightening one or two ends of the roof to create a vertical, or gable, wall.
These conversions really maximise interior space and can be combined with a dormer conversion to increase space even further. However, hip-to-gable conversions are more expensive and will need planning permission.
Here our team at MY Carpenter lists the attic conversions best suited to different house types in Basingstoke, Fleet and the surrounding areas:
Of course, to find the right option for your home, it’s important to consider factors like proximity to other buildings, specific restrictions in your area and the style of your property.
